A Note from the President
The
Museum newsletter is back! The new format will allow us to provide
interesting tidbits of historical information, progress of ongoing
projects and events at the Museum and periodic updates of interior and
exterior renovations to preserve the Bradley house.
One of our educational objectives
is to reach out to the current generation and share historical data with
children, family members, visitors, and guests as a form of teaching and
as a method of preserving the rich traditions, culture and heritage of
Presque Isle County. At the classroom level, it “is the belief that
students who are immersed in the study of their own place are more eager
to learn and to be involved in the stewardship of their community.” (National
Wildlife Federation, February/March 2008)
This year commemorates two very
significant events; the Metz fire which occurred in October, 1908, and the
sinking of the steamship Carl D. Bradley in November 1958. In many
current conversations with children and young adults, we find these
tragedies are a vague memory and, in some cases, unknown events. Plan to
bring family members and friends to the commemorative activities--October
12th for the Metz program and
November 18th for the Bradley
steamship memorial. Further developments of the programs are in progress
and we will get the particulars out to you as soon as they are finalized.
You can call or write the
Museum to obtain local history information. As an added feature, we have
created a column entitled “Ask Mark” in
The View from 176 to answer your questions. We encourage students
and adults to visit the Museum for local history searches or genealogy
studies. There are resourceful tools such as township school registry
journals and diaries that may be helpful and enjoyable while browsing
through local history.

The newest member of the museum’s Board of Trustees is
Ronald Horrocks of Onaway. Ron and his wife Jean are shown posing with
Santa Claus during our “Christmas at the Bradley House” festivities. Ron
and Jean have been responsible for most of our Christmas decorations the
past two years. Ron says that they have been
serious
collectors of Christmas decorations for about twenty years.
Ron recently retired after forty years with Presque
Isle Electric & Gas Co. In addition to collecting Christmas decorations,
he also enjoys hunting and fishing.
