November 18 will mark the 50th anniversary of
the tragic sinking of the Steamer Carl D. Bradley in 1958.
Thirty-three of the ship’s thirty-five crewmembers died in the
sinking. Most were from
Rogers City or the surrounding area. Quite literally,
everyone who lived in
Rogers City at that time was affected in some way.
The museum is
collaborating with the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum, the
Presque Isle District Library, and the local Ministerial
Association to plan a series of commemorative events. While
many of the plans have not yet been finalized, we do know that
the observance of the anniversary will begin with a memorial
service at the
Rogers City High School gymnasium on Tuesday, November
18.
During the balance of
that week, Bradley-related activities will be held each day at
various sites in the community, including the museum, library,
maritime museum, and the Senior and Community Center. It is
hoped that tours of Calcite will also be offered. All of the
local churches are being asked to observe the anniversary in
their services on Sunday, November 23.
Complete details on the
various activities will be posted on this site as they become
available. Information will also be provided through the
Advance and the other organizations involved.
We will have exhibits
related to Steamer Bradley on display at the museum throughout
the year.
