Mayday!  Tragedy at Sea

By Jim Hopp

Jim Hopp was in the fourth grade at Rogers City Elementary School on the morning of November 19, 1958, when he and the other residents of the small community on the north shore of Lake Huron learned that the freighter Carl D. Bradley had sunk in Lake Michigan the previous evening.  Thirty-three sailors went down with their ship; most from Rogers City.

Less than seven years later, on the morning of May 7, 1965, the steamer Cedarville, another boat from Rogers City, was rammed and sunk in the Straits of Mackinac.  Seven sailors died with their ship; six of whom were from Rogers City.  Hopp was attending Rogers City High School at the time.

In Mayday!,  Hopp tells the tragic stories of the Bradley and Cedarville from the vantage point of someone who understands the impact the two disasters had on Rogers City.
